This timeless battle hymn by Martin Luther gets our hearts ready to celebrate the Reformation.  In this sparkling work of 8 movements, J. S. Bach – the stalwart Lutheran – constantly quotes the classic hymn, juxtaposing Luther’s original “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott” with another beautiful poem by Salomon Franck.  Trumpets, drums, oboes, and strings carry us into battle with their martial rhythms – and as the hymn states, God “holds the field forever”!
